APA FORMAT 6TH EDITION SAMPLE RESEARCH PAPER

The APA (American Psychological Association) style is a citation and formatting style commonly used in the social sciences, including fields like psychology, sociology, and education. The 6th edition of the APA manual was published in 2010, and it provides guidelines for the structure and formatting of research papers. Here is an example of a research paper written in APA format:

Title: The Impact of Parental Involvement on Children's Academic Achievement

Abstract:

The present study investigated the relationship between parental involvement and children's academic achievement. A sample of 120 elementary school students and their parents participated in the study. Parental involvement was measured using a standardized questionnaire, and children's academic achievement was assessed using their grades from the previous academic year. The results indicated a positive relationship between parental involvement and academic achievement, such that higher levels of parental involvement were associated with higher grades. These findings suggest that parental involvement is an important factor in children's academic success.

Introduction:

Parental involvement in children's education has been shown to have a positive impact on children's academic achievement (Hoover-Dempsey & Sandler, 1997; Jeynes, 2003; Karbownik & Bronfenbrenner, 1990). However, the specific nature of this relationship is not well understood. The present study aims to investigate the relationship between parental involvement and academic achievement in a sample of elementary school students.

Method:

Participants: The sample consisted of 120 elementary school students and their parents. The students were in grades 3-5 and came from a range of socio-economic backgrounds.

Measures: Parental involvement was measured using the Parental Involvement Questionnaire (PIQ; Hoover-Dempsey & Sandler, 1997), which is a standardized measure of parental involvement in children's education. The PIQ consists of 30 items and assesses three dimensions of parental involvement: communication, involvement in learning, and support for education. Children's academic achievement was assessed using their grades from the previous academic year. Grades were standardized to a mean of 0 and a standard deviation of 1.

Procedure: Parents and students were recruited from three elementary schools in a large urban school district. Parents were asked to complete the PIQ and provide their child's grades from the previous academic year. The data were collected over a two-week period in the spring.

Analysis: The relationship between parental involvement and academic achievement was assessed using a Pearson correlation coefficient.

Results:

The results indicated a positive relationship between parental involvement and academic achievement, r(118) = .24, p < .05. This suggests that higher levels of parental involvement are associated with higher grades.

Discussion:

The present study provides evidence for a positive relationship between parental involvement and academic achievement. These findings are consistent with previous research on the topic (Hoover-Dempsey & Sandler, 1997; Jeynes, 2003; Karbownik & Bronfenbrenner, 1990). The present study extends this research by examining the relationship between parental involvement and academic achievement in a sample of elementary school students.

The results of this study suggest that parents can play an important role in their children's academic success. Future research should explore the specific mechanisms by which parental involvement leads to improved academic achievement, as well as strategies for promoting parental involvement in schools.
