Title: The Effects of Social Support on Psychological Well-Being


Abstract:


The present study investigated the relationship between social support and psychological well-being. A total of 120 participants were recruited from a large, urban university and completed self-report measures of social support and psychological well-being. Results indicated a significant positive correlation between social support and psychological well-being, such that individuals with higher levels of social support reported greater psychological well-being. These findings suggest that interventions aimed at improving social support may be effective in enhancing psychological well-being.


Introduction:


Psychological well-being is an important aspect of overall health and quality of life. Previous research has consistently demonstrated that social support plays a crucial role in promoting psychological well-being (e.g., Cohen & Wills, 1985; Thoits, 1995). Social support refers to the perception of having assistance and resources available from one's social network in times of need (Cohen & Wills, 1985). It can take many forms, including emotional support (e.g., expressions of love and affection), tangible support (e.g., assistance with tasks or financial resources), and informational support (e.g., advice and guidance) (Cohen & Wills, 1985).


Method:


Participants:


A total of 120 participants were recruited from a large, urban university. Participants were between the ages of 18 and 25 and were recruited through flyers posted on campus and through a participant pool maintained by the university's psychology department. Participants were compensated with course credit for their participation.


Measures:


Social support was measured using the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS; Zimet, Dahlem, Zimet, & Farley, 1988), which is a 12-item self-report measure of perceived social support from three sources: family, friends, and significant others. The MSPSS has demonstrated good internal consistency, with a Cronbach's alpha of .87 in the present study.


Psychological well-being was measured using the Ryff Scales of Psychological Well-Being (Ryff, 1989), which is a 36-item self-report measure of six dimensions of psychological well-being: autonomy, personal growth, positive relations with others, environmental mastery, self-acceptance, and purpose in life. The Ryff Scales have demonstrated good internal consistency, with a Cronbach's alpha of .95 in the present study.


Procedure:


Participants were tested in groups of 10 to 15 in a quiet room on the university campus. Upon arriving at the testing room, participants were informed of the purpose of the study and provided with written informed consent. They were then asked to complete the MSPSS and Ryff Scales, which took approximately 30 minutes to complete. After completing the measures, participants were debriefed and thanked for their participation.


Results:


A Pearson's correlation was conducted to examine the relationship between social support and psychological well-being. Results indicated a significant positive correlation between social support and psychological well-being, r(118) = .57, p < .01. This suggests that individuals with higher levels of social support tend to have higher levels of psychological well-being.
