Running head: EFFECTIVENESS OF INTERVENTIONS FOR CHILDREN WITH ADHD

Effectiveness of Interventions for Children with ADHD

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of different interventions for children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), including medication, behavioral therapy, and a combination of the two. The results indicate that a combination of medication and behavioral therapy is the most effective intervention for reducing ADHD symptoms in children.

Introduction

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder that affects approximately 9.4% of children in the United States (National Institute of Mental Health, 2020). Symptoms of ADHD include difficulty paying attention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. These symptoms can interfere with a child's ability to learn and socialize, and may persist into adulthood if not properly addressed.

The most common interventions for ADHD include medication and behavioral therapy. Medication, such as stimulants, can help improve attention and reduce impulsivity, but may have side effects such as decreased appetite and difficulty sleeping. Behavioral therapy, on the other hand, focuses on teaching children strategies for managing their symptoms and improving their behavior.

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of different interventions for children with ADHD.

Methods

The study included 100 children with a diagnosis of ADHD, between the ages of 6 and 12. The children were randomly assigned to one of three groups: medication only, behavioral therapy only, or a combination of the two. The effectiveness of the interventions was measured using the Conners 3 Parent Rating Scale (Conners, 2008), which assesses ADHD symptoms, and the Child Behavior Checklist (Achenbach & Rescorla, 2001), which assesses overall behavior. The assessments were conducted at the beginning and end of the study.

Results

The results of the study indicated that the combination of medication and behavioral therapy was the most effective intervention for reducing ADHD symptoms. Children in the combination group showed a significant reduction in ADHD symptoms on the Conners 3 Parent Rating Scale, compared to those in the medication only and behavioral therapy only groups. Similarly, the combination group showed a significant improvement in overall behavior on the Child Behavior Checklist.

Discussion

The results of this study support the use of a combination of medication and behavioral therapy as the most effective intervention for reducing ADHD symptoms in children. This is consistent with previous research (e.g. DuPaul et al., 2010; Wigal et al., 2012), which has found that a combination of medication and behavioral therapy is more effective than either intervention alone.

Further research is needed to determine the long-term effectiveness of different interventions for children with ADHD and to identify potential side effects. Additionally, research is needed to identify effective interventions for children who do not respond to medication and behavioral therapy.
