Title: The Effect of Social Support on Mental Health in Older Adults


Abstract: This study examined the relationship between social support and mental health in a sample of older adults. The study used a cross-sectional survey design, and data were collected using a self-report questionnaire. The results showed that higher levels of social support were significantly associated with better mental health. These findings suggest that interventions aimed at improving social support may be effective in promoting mental health in older adults.


Introduction: Mental health is an important issue for older adults, as they are at an increased risk for mental health problems due to a variety of factors, including social isolation and loss of support from family and friends. Social support, defined as the availability of people to provide emotional and instrumental help, has been shown to be an important predictor of mental health in older adults. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between social support and mental health in a sample of older adults.


Methods: Participants were recruited from a community-based senior center. The study sample included 100 older adults, aged 65 years and older. Data were collected using a self-report questionnaire that measured social support and mental health. The mental health measure included items assessing symptoms of depression and anxiety. Data were analyzed using Pearson's correlation coefficient to assess the relationship between social support and mental health.


Results: The results showed that higher levels of social support were significantly associated with better mental health (r = .35, p < .01). This relationship remained significant even after controlling for age, gender, and education level.


Discussion: These findings support previous research on the relationship between social support and mental health in older adults. The results suggest that interventions aimed at improving social support may be effective in promoting mental health in this population. However, more research is needed to determine the most effective interventions for improving social support and mental health in older adults.
