Title: The Effects of Social Support on Mental Health

Author: Jane Doe

Affiliation: University of Chicago

Abstract:

This study examined the relationship between social support and mental health. A sample of 100 participants was recruited from a local community center. Participants completed a survey that measured their levels of social support and their mental health. Results showed that participants who reported higher levels of social support had better mental health. These findings suggest that social support is an important factor in maintaining good mental health.

Introduction:

Mental health is an important aspect of overall health and well-being. Many factors, such as genetics, life experiences, and social support, can influence mental health. Social support, or the perception of having friends, family, and other people to turn to in times of need, has been shown to be an important factor in mental health. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between social support and mental health.

Method:

Participants: A sample of 100 participants was recruited from a local community center. Participants were aged 18-65 and were recruited using convenience sampling.

Measures: The survey included two measures: the Social Support Scale (SSS) and the Mental Health Inventory (MHI). The SSS is a 5-item scale that assesses the perception of social support, and the MHI is a 20-item scale that assesses mental health. Both scales have been widely used in previous research and have good reliability and validity.

Procedure: Participants were given the survey to complete in a quiet location at the community center. They were asked to respond to each item on a 5-point Likert scale, ranging from "strongly agree" to "strongly disagree." The survey took approximately 20 minutes to complete.

Results:

Descriptive statistics were calculated for the sample. The mean score on the SSS was 3.45 (SD = 0.78), and the mean score on the MHI was 12.67 (SD = 3.44). A Pearson's correlation was calculated to examine the relationship between social support and mental health. The correlation was significant, r(98) = 0.53, p < 0.01, indicating that higher levels of social support were associated with better mental health.

Discussion:

This study provides support for the relationship between social support and mental health. The results are consistent with previous research, which has shown that social support can have a protective effect on mental health. These findings have important implications for mental health interventions, as they suggest that interventions that focus on increasing social support may be effective in improving mental health.
